they як відсилка до однієї особи (singular they)

Уживання they, them, their для відсилання до невідомої особи, позначеної someone, everyone, nobody, замість he або she. Дієслово після someone / everyone стоїть в однині (Someone is calling), а після самого they — у множині: Someone called — they are waiting outside.
